We’re not rare. We’re unique
There are more than three million people in Spain with rare diseases, and the AVA Foundation works to explain what a rare disease diagnosis means, and to provide an insight into the daily life of those who have to live with such a diagnosis.
For the International Rare Disease Day, held on 29 February, we created the #ImNotRareImUnique campaign, with a storytelling approach aimed at bringing in other connotations of “rarity”. Rare should not mean being excluded from society, but instead be linked with ideas of being exceptional, special, and what we call unique.
In response to this challenge we proposed a creative approach that conveyed what it meant to be unique, coined the Spanish hashtag #nosoyrarosoyunico, put it on a T-shirt and asked influencers to share it via social media. The initiative had a notable impact on social media, above all Instagram, thanks to the collaboration of Carla Pereyra, Mabel Lozano, Natalia Verbeke, Eugenia Martínez de Irujo Pepe Ribagorda and other figures.
